Bed Selection Tips

What is your pet’s sleeping style? Your dog or cat needs to be able to sleep in his or her favorite position comfortably in the new bed.

  • Dogs who like to stretch out, or maybe even sleep on their back, have the space they need with an appropriately sized Rectangular or Round bed.
  • A dog who curls up into a circle will do well with a Round bed, with or without sides. Be sure it’s big enough for any “turning around three times” ritual!
  • Pets who sleep up against the cushions on your furniture can enjoy the same support with a Bolster Bed, Pet Sofa, Pet Couch, or Sheeper Hugger.
  • If your dog sleeps on your furniture and tends to rest their chin on the armrest, they can do the same thing while resting in the Pet Sofa or Bolster Bed.
  • Dogs or cats who love burrowing under blankets or sleeping in small spaces they discover will love the Cozy Cave beds.

What type of bed will work best for your pet?

  • A classic cushion bed, whether Rectangular, Round, or Quiltie, is great for dogs who have usually slept on the floor before getting a bed of their own. This type of bed provides a soft, supportive place to sleep without adding too much extra warmth, and works well in warmer climates.
  • A nest-like bed, such as the Pet Couch or Sheeper Hugger, gives your pet a feeling of security and protection from drafts. Your pet will be able to stay warmer in this type of bed. The traditional wicker beds are another great nest bed option.
  • The more tailored, upholstered look of such nest beds as the Luxury Corner or Square beds may coordinate better with the décor of the rest of the room.
  • More enclosed beds such as the Cozy Cave or Kitty Condo give the maximum warmth and feeling of safety.
  • Beds such as the Bolster Bed and Luxury Sofa are perfect for dogs who have preferred sleeping on your furniture.
  • Orthopedic beds provide necessary support for older dogs, or those with back or joint problems.
  • Crate pads will fit into crates, and also are good choices for travel.

What size bed does your pet need?

  • For a dog who sleeps stretched out, measure when he or she is in their usual sleeping position. Start from nose or front feet, whichever extends the farthest, and go to the base of the tail. Add 9-12“ to that measurement and you will have a good idea of the size bed that will be most comfortable.
  • If your dog usually sleeps curled up, take the widest measurement across him or her. If you are choosing a bed with sides, your dog will probably be happiest with a bed that only allows about 6” extra, so they can snuggle against those cozy sides.
  • Cats will do well with the smallest sizes of any bed, or with one of the beds designed just for them. Popular beds for cats are hugger style beds.
  • Do you have dogs or cats who like to sleep close to each other? You will want to choose a bed the can accommodate everyone!

Where does your pet like to sleep? You will want to choose a bed that suits that location.

  • Does your dog want to relax where the action is, keeping track of the family’s activities? You can choose a bed in the style and color, patterns, plaids, or prints that will coordinate perfectly with your home’s décor. Then, there’s no need to hide or move the bed when you entertain!
  • Does your dog’s idea of bedtime mean actually retiring to your bedroom? Our wide selection of colors, fabrics, and shapes will allow you to pick a bed that complements your other furniture and color palette.
  • If your dog prefers to retreat to his or her crate, a crate pad will make that special space into a comfortable den.
  • A dog who sleeps overnight or naps outside needs a bed that is weather resistant. The Pool & Patio Collection is just right for sleeping in fresh air.

What type of fabric cover will you want? You will want to consider coordinating with your decor, your climate, and your pet's shedding -- how much and of what color.

  • The poly/cotton blend fabrics come in a wide variety of colors and prints, and have a woven texture.
  • Quilty beds have quilted tops which allow hair to be shaken off easily.
  • Microsuede beds have a luxurious texture and are available in sophisticated colors and patterns.
  • The Sherpa faux lamb's wool tops or linings are especially warm and soft. The classic round and rectanular beds offer a choice of cream or black fleece tops. You can make your selection based upon the predominant color your pet sheds, keeping the bed much more attractive between washings.
  • Water resistant fabric is best for beds which stay outside or for dogs with incontinence.

What type of fill will be best?

  • Many of the beds we offer have a premium spun spring-wound filling for maximum loft and cedar bits for freshness.
  • Our custom Bolster Round beds and Luxury Pillows come with an inner liner filled with the high loft version of spun poly fill.
  • Some beds, such as the Super Ortho Lounge and the Luxury Sofa, have premiumegg crate or memory foam.
